Verbotim 2tb xhd trouble

I purchased a verbatim 2TB external HD to go with my Bell 9242 PVR. I was able to format and download TV shows, however, on playback or restoring to PVR it works for a few minutes then disconnects itself from the PVR. I would like to know how to get the XHD to not shutdown and to how to get the recordings back so I can watch them.
