How can I split my satellite signal for my DVR?

Postby Marc M » Wed May 27, 2009 6:24 pm

I have DirecTV with a DVR. Right now I am not able to record two channels at once because there is only one coax coming out of the wall. My landlord will not allow another line to be run by drilling though the outside wall nor is he willing to run another line through the building. Is there any other way I can get a second line so I can use both tuners? If I use a diplexer to combine the signals at the satellite and and one to split them at the wall again, will that work?
Sigh, I DO have a dual tuner receiver. what I don't have is the coaxial line to deliver the signal to the second tuner.

Sorry to tell you but you cannot split the signal to do what you are asking. You have to have a 2nd line running from the dish or multiswitch to the receiver. If you split the signal like you want to to make two cables, you will only get a searching for satellite error on your tv.

directv is putting out new dishes that only use one line to bring into the home so that you won't need two dedicated coax cables for a dvr, but they are having problems with those now. I know my husband has been trained and he has installed a few.

Ok - called my husband and he said that I was correct. He said to buy a flat coax cable and run it from the dish along side the place into your home and then hook it up to your dvr. Make sure the landlord won't care if the cable is ran into the home that way. There is no drilling involved - just put it in a doorway or window. It's flat so you can still shut the window or door. GOod luck.
was a call center employee for 2 years, did installation for 6 months with my husband till I got pregnant. But, my husband is still an installer - he worked at dtv for almost 2 years and now has been isntalling for 2 years. He's actually working now :)

a diplexer wont work. The way "justathought" explained will work perfectly. If your using an existing line that has been pre run through the walls, to a cable cable box or something. Then you can bring in the second cable from an unused outlet in another room and run it along the base boards to the dvr. Then run a cable from the cable box to the dish.

Justathought was correct. And only her. Although the dish she speaks of that allows both tuners to work with one line is called a Single Wire Multiswitch. SWM for short. It is only available for HD customers. And only in certain markets. I install them in Phoenix and I do at least five or six a week. I do not receive service calls on them either. So they do work great. The one on my house has worked perfectly for over a year. It just has to be installed correctly.

you will need your exhisting diplexers plus a 4 way switch such as this one http://www.rainbowappliance.com/DTV3X4.h… connect your exhisting 2 wires to the switch, and then connect your reciever to the switch outputs

You need a dual-tuner receiver from Direct TV.
A second line is not going to help you because you need a separate satellite tuner as well. So, you might as well get the receiver with two tuners.
